Is it any wonder or surprise that Malaysia has the third highest road death rate in the world?

According to the World Health Organisation 2013 data, Malaysia registered a death rate of 23% per 100,000 population!

Four years after, do you think the situation has improved?

“With the roads infested with speedsters, road bullies, Mat Rempits (road thugs) motorcyclists, teenage cycling racers and road users who have no respect for road traffic regulations, what do you expect?” Gerakan Deputy Speaker Syed Abdul Razak Alsagoff said.

He said the federal government, namely the Road Transport Department and the police, should take the bulk of the blame for the “road transport mess”.

“They have failed to make an example out of the Mat Rempits and road bullies. Enforcement is lacking and the Mat Rempits get off lightly after every operation of rounding them up,” he added.

Syed Razak, who is Gerakan’s nominee to contest N.37 Bukit Lanjan in the coming 14th General Election (GE14), said road traffic enforcement “must be carried out without any quarter being given ‘special privileges’ for whatever reason”.

“There must be no political consideration nor political interference when dealing with road bullies and road thugs (Mat Rempits),” he added.

MALAYSIA has the third highest road death rate in the world, a Bloomberg report says.

The country registered a death rate of 23% per 100,000 population, according to World Health Organisation 2013 data, the report said.

Thailand has the worst record with a death rate of 36.2% followed by South Africa with 25% per 100,000 population.

Apart from Thailand, Malaysia also has the highest death rate in Southeast Asia. Among others, Indonesia registered a 15% death rate and Philippines 11%.

Titled “Riskiest Roads – Here’s another thing investors in emerging markets to worry about: Traffic”, Bloomberg said the average death rate for developed nations is 9.3%, compared with 24.1% for low income and 18.4% for middle income countries.

The report stated that road users in low and middle income countries are more than twice as likely to die in a traffic accident than their counterparts in developed nations. – June 20, 2017."
