Much has been reported about unhygienic and dirty eateries in Malaysia. But it is not only happening in Malaysia but also in Europe!

Just how long has such blatant irresponsibility been happening undetected?

Read these for context:

“It sure looks like the Health Ministry’s current S.O.P (Standard Operating Procedure) enforcement is no deterrent to dirty food handlers and operators,” Gerakan Deputy Speaker Syed Abdull Razak Alsagoff said.

He said state and federal government health authorities must now consider more severe and punitive actions as “irresponsible and selfish” food handlers and operators continue to disregard public hygiene and health unabated.

Syed Razak, who is Gerakan’s nominee to contest N.37 Bukit Lanjan in the coming 14th General Election (GE14), said:

“It is time for the health authorities to come down hard on errant food handlers and operators. The S.O.P of closing down dirty eateries for two weeks for cleaning up is not working.

“They don’t take such action seriously. They don’t fear the action and compound fines.

“It is time to consider closing down dirty eateries permanently and blacklisting the errant operators and owners. They must be barred from the food and beverage business after committing a certain number of times of unhygienic food handling."

Syed Razak said public hygiene and health matters must not and cannot be allowed to be compromised any further by food handlers, operators and owners.

“They are simply selfish and irresponsible, caring only for profits, giving little attention to cleanliness, hygienic practices and public health.

“They must not be given any sympathy anymore. Weed them out of business, no matter how popular or good their food tastes,” he added.

And, the latest development on the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital (HTAR) cafeteria is most shocking and unacceptable.

"Why the special treatment and leniency? Is this the Health Ministry's new S.O.P to promote cleanliness and public hygiene?

"Who's the cafeteria operator that is allowed to get away scot-free without almost no enforcement action? Come on, get serious Mr Health Minister!

"This is certainly not the way to educate and promote high standard public hygiene and cleanliness among food handlers, operators and owners," Syed Razak said.

This was what national news agency Bernama reported and posted by online news portal The Malaysian Insight (TMI):

THE Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital (HTAR) cafeteria in Klang, which was ordered to close yesterday afternoon, was allowed to resume operations at 10pm on the same day.

HTAR director Dr Ding Lay Ming told Bernama the cafeteria was allowed to reopen following the Klang Health Office’s assessment of its cleanlinesss, which was found to meet requirements.

The Klang Health Office issued a notice for the closure of the cafeteria at 2pm yesterday following an inspection prompted by a 32-second video clip showing a rat helping itself to the contents of the food trays in the cafeteria that went viral.

Selangor Health Department director Zailan Adnan said the cafeteria was allowed to resume operations after for the sake of the hospital staff and visitors.
However, she said the department would continue to monitor the cleanliness of hospital cafeterias and would blacklist or terminate the operators that were often issued clean-up notices. – Bernama, August 20, 2017./TMI"
