It is with great relief that monarchs in Malaysia have taken a stand against extremists to defend national unity and harmony.
Religion, especially Islam, has always been a sensitive issue in Malaysia.
“As a ‘I Am Malaysian First’ citizen, I am loyal to country and the King (Yang di-Pertuan Agong),” Gerakan Deputy Speaker Syed Abdul Razak Alsagoff said.
He said the sovereign rulers of Malaysia, as religious heads of their respective states, “are the paramount authority on religious matters”.
“I, therefore, do not intend to comment any further on the matter. The Johor Sultan has spoken (above video clip) and that is his command to his subjects,” Syed Razak said, adding that the Council of Rulers had also made its stand clear, supporting the Johor Sultan.

“Unity is strength. United we stand, divided we fall. That’s clear enough for me to understand and treasure for Malaysians and Malaysia to progress harmoniously,” he added.

PETALING JAYA: Speaking out against those who wish to forbid many things under the pretense of religion, Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar stressed "there is no place for narrow-mindedness" in the state.
In his speech at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia’s 17th convocation ceremony on Saturday (Oct 14), the Sultan said that those who cannot live harmoniously in society should live in a cave.
He pointed out that such overzealous constraints would make living in a community impossible.
“When banknotes may have been held by a pork seller or alcohol seller, does the Government have to make Muslims-only money?
His Majesty was speaking in regards to the case of a Muslim-only laundrette in Muar.
He also struck out at Muslim preacher Zamihan Mat Zin who recently criticised him over the case.
Referring to him as an “empty vessel”, he said Zamihan talked arrogantly, mocked other races and denied his actions after being criticised by the public.
He also said he would direct the Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAIJ) to stop dealing with the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and to carry out their own to carry out checks on Muslim preachers in the state. – The Star Online

"The Rulers greatly appreciate the strong stance of His Majesty the Sultan of Johor in forbidding the 'Muslim-only laundry' in the state of Johor, as well as the stance taken by His Royal Highness the Raja Muda of Perlis in a similar case in the State of Perlis,” said a statement issued today and signed by the Keeper of the Rulers' Seal, Syed Danial Syed Ahmad.
The rulers said the Johor Sultan and Perlis Raja Musa’s stance had demonstrated their commitment to “ensure Muslims behave with respect, moderation and inclusiveness” in a country that is home to people of diverse faiths and ethnic groups.
Last month, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar of Johor told off a launderette in Muar for only accepting Muslim customers. He said Johor belonged to people of all races and faiths and that it was “not a Taliban state”.
Perlis mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainab Abidin had also investigated a Muslim-only launderette in Kangar on the instruction of the Raja Muda of Perlis.
"In recent weeks, the actions of certain individuals have gone beyond all acceptable standards of decency, putting at risk the harmony that currently exists within our multireligious and multiethnic society,” the Malay Rulers said.
"The Rulers are of the opinion that the damaging implications of such actions are more severe when they are erroneously associated with or committed in the name of Islam.
"As a religion that encourages its followers to be respectful, moderate, and inclusive, the reputation of Islam must not ever be tainted by the divisive actions of certain groups or individuals which may lead to rifts among the rakyat," the statement said.
The Malay Rulers took issues of unity and harmony among citizens very seriously and they reminded Malaysians to adhere to the core principles in the Federal Constitution and the Rukun Negara, it added.

PETALING JAYA – The Malay Rulers are concerned that the unity and harmony in Malaysia are eroding as the nation faces an onslaught of racially controversial issues.
“In recent weeks, the actions of certain individuals have gone beyond all acceptable standards of decency, putting at risk the harmony that currently exists within our multi-religious and multi-ethnic society,” said Keeper of the Ruler’s Seal Tan Sri Datuk Seri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad in a statement on Tuesday.
“The Rulers are of the opinion that the damaging implications of such actions are more severe when they are erroneously associated with or committed in the name of Islam.
“As a religion that encourages its followers to be respectful, moderate, and inclusive, the reputation of Islam must not ever be tainted by the divisive actions of certain groups or individuals which may lead to rifts among the rakyat,” the statement added.
He said Malaysians must continue to follow the core principles embedded in the Federal Constitution and Rukun Negara which was drafted on the bedrock that the diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds in Malaysia must be respected.
“(The Rukun Negara) must continue to serve as a compass to all parties, be they leaders, government officials and citizens of our country.
