BUKIT LANJAN: Digital world’s socio-economic influence starts to take root in Malaysia

Have you noticed the significant drop in classified advertisments in the mainstream media, especially job vacancies?

Perhaps, one of the main reasons for the drop is also due to Malaysians embracing the digital world.

“National news agency Bernama’s report posted by The Star Online titled ‘Online hiring on the rise in Malaysia’ is nothing surprising,” Gerakan Deputy Speaker Syed Abdul Razak Alsagoff said.

“It is a global trend or phenomena. The lifestyles of peoples across the globe are changing tremendously, influenced by the digital technology and economy.

“The question is whether Malaysians are being appropriately prepared by their governments to adapt to the changes in economy and technology,” he added.

With an increasing number of startups emerging into the consumer internet space, there is a demand for skilled and qualified talents. This triggers a huge number of opportunities for freshers and experienced candidates at all levels. The recruiters indulge in mass recruitment through employee referrals and walk-ins, which may or may not generate the desired results. Here comes the role of a few disruptive startups (online assessment platforms, video assessment platforms, and networking platforms) which, by leveraging social media, digital media, data analytics, and big data, are dramatically changing business intelligence in the domain of recruitment … for more, go to https://yourstory.com/2015/07/recruitment-startup-industry/
Syed Razak, who is Gerakan’s nominee to contest N.37 Bukit Lanjan in the coming 14th General Election (GE14), said Malaysia’s socio-economic progress would surely lag “if the governments (both state and federal) just continue with ‘business as usual’, intensifying their politicking and spending lesser and lesser time in good governance”.

“Politicians and leaders are surely spending too much time just politicking, fooling around with racial and religious bigots, instead of coming up with ideas, proposals and policies for good governance to prepare the rakyat dan negara (people and country) for the global digital economy.

“In short, what I am stressing is that the governments in Malaysia are just not doing enough to prepare Malaysians and Malaysia for the digital world.

“There is so much more that the governments can do to help Malaysians prepare for the digital evolution in life and commerce but they are not spending enough time to plan the strategy to innovate and keep abreast with the changes, if not ahead,” he added.

KUALA LUMPUR: Online hiring activity in Malaysia recorded a 7% growth in September 2017 over the same month last year, with the oil and gas sector emerging as the best-performing sector, according to the latest Monster Employment Index.

The index, a gauge of online job posting activities, is compiled monthly by Monster.com.

Monster.com said the O&G sector recorded 37% year-on-year growth in online hiring, followed by information technology, telecommunications/Internet services provider and business process outsourcing/Internet-enabled services, which recorded 34% growth.

Monster.com APAC and Middle East managing director Sanjay Modi said the steady shift from an established manufacturing base to digital technology and advanced skills boosted Malaysia's job market with new opportunities.

“This is good news. However, to remain relevant and employable, talent at all levels must continue to upskill to meet the dynamic needs of the workforce,” he said. – Bernama
